On June 27, 2026, our Dinwiddie Avenue campus was filled with something incredibly powerful: hope.

CARITAS welcomed alumni, participants, community partners, supporters, elected officials, and neighbors to celebrate the grand re-opening of The Healing Place for Men and the Men’s Emergency Shelter. Together, we gathered to mark the completion of a $3.7 million renovation project that will help ensure men in our community have access to a safe, dignified space where healing and recovery can take root.

The festivities began with remarks from CARITAS leadership, a proclamation read by Delegate Betsy Carr, and a moving reflection from Brooke Davis, who honored the memory of her son, Alex, by sharing a heartfelt reminder of why recovery services matter. Their words reflected what was felt throughout the day: every person deserves the opportunity to rebuild their life with support, compassion, and dignity.

For more than two decades, The Healing Place for Men has helped thousands of individuals pursue recovery. Since opening in Richmond in 2005, the program has served more than 17,700 men. In 2025 alone, more than 380 men received recovery services through the program, while the Men’s Emergency Shelter served 275 men experiencing homelessness.

The renovated campus includes improved living spaces, dining areas, medical and behavioral health spaces, outdoor gathering areas, and critical infrastructure upgrades – all designed to better support participants on their journey toward recovery and stability.

Following the ceremony, the celebration continued with Recovery Community Day. The campus came alive with music, food, raffles, resource tables, and conversations between alumni, families, community partners, and supporters. More than 300 people gathered to celebrate recovery, share resources, and remind one another that healing happens in community.

Throughout the day, one message remained clear: recovery is possible, and no one has to do it alone.

We are deeply grateful to the donors, foundations, congregations, public funders, volunteers, and community members whose support made these renovations possible. Because of you, the Dinwiddie Ave campus will continue to serve as a place where men can find safety, connection, and the opportunity to build a new future for many years to come!
