As the Richmond region braces for extreme winter weather this weekend, we wanted to share how we’ve been preparing at CARITAS. We appreciate everyone who has reached out asking to help and value the deep sense of community among our staff, volunteers, supporters, clients, and others.
CARITAS staff have been closely monitoring weather reports and working diligently this week to prepare in advance of the storm.
Those preparations include:
- Developing a staffing plan to ensure that we have staff onsite to provide services to those in our shelter and recovery programs.
- Securing and storing enough food and supplies to serve the individuals and staff at our campus during the storm and its aftermath.
- Close collaboration with the local governments and other partners to mobilize additional resources.
- Continuous communication with the City of Richmond and Salvation Army on operations and activation for the Surge Shelter.
- Coordinating with local church congregations on additional support in advance of the winter storm.
If you or someone you know is experiencing homelessness or another crisis, there are regional resources that may be able to help, including Help1RVA and Virginia 211.
Additionally, we encourage everyone to monitor updates from the City of Richmond as well as Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico counties. In Richmond, you’ll be able to call 311 to get updates on resources during the winter storm and after.
Please stay safe in this dangerous weather!
