As National Recovery Month comes to an end, we are reflecting on the moments of celebration with our neighbors who are living in recovery and recognize the families, friends, and communities who walk alongside them.
At CARITAS, we believe recovery is strengthened by connection. Whether you’re in recovery yourself, supporting a loved one, or simply looking for a way to show up for your community, there are plenty of ways to make an impact beyond National Recovery Month.
Here are eight ways you can support recovery and help make Richmond a community where everyone has the support they need to heal and rebuild:
1. Attend Recovery Events
One of the simplest ways to support recovery is to show up and be present.
Communities across Richmond come together for celebrations, educational events, memorials, and opportunities to connect. At CARITAS, we host several ways to gather, including our Healing Place Annual Alumni Coin Ceremony and Block Party, where we celebrate the accomplishments and continued journeys of Healing Place alumni.
You can also join us for events like The Healing Plate, an evening that celebrates CARITAS’ impact in our community while investing in the life-changing and life-saving programs that make our impact possible.
Whether you’re attending to celebrate a milestone, remember someone we’ve lost, learn something new, or simply stand alongside our recovery community, your presence matters.
2. Share a Recovery Story
Stories have the power to change the way we understand addiction and recovery.
Sharing your own recovery story and talking about what helped you, who showed up for you, or what recovery looks like in your life today is a powerful tool. If sharing your own story isn’t right for you, you can still make an impact by listening to and amplifying the stories of others.
We see everyday how powerful it can be when people share their experiences. From Healing Place alumni to current participants, families, staff, and peer mentors, these stories remind us that there is no single path to recovery.
3. Spread the Word on Social Media
Your social media feed can be a place where recovery stories, resources, and hope are amplified.
Share events hosted by local community organizations. Post a recovery story that moved you. Share information about treatment and support. Help someone find a local resource, or simply repost a CARITAS post reminding your community that recovery is possible.
Be sure to follow CARITAS on Facebook and Instagram, and share our posts to help more of our neighbors discover opportunities to heal and rebuild.
4. Learn Something New About Addiction and Recovery
Supporting recovery starts with understanding it.
Take some time this season to learn about substance use disorder, treatment, recovery, harm reduction, and the barriers people can face when seeking help. Learning can help replace stigma with understanding – and understanding can make it easier for someone to reach out when they need support.
CARITAS offers several pathways to recovery and rebuilding, including The Healing Place and the CARITAS Recovery Residences. Learning about the resources available in your own community can also help you know where to point someone when they are ready for the next step.
5. Start a Conversation
Recovery becomes easier to talk about when we make room for honest conversations.
Check in with a friend on how they celebrated Recovery Month, or talk with your family about addiction and recovery. If someone shares their experience with substance use, listen without judgement.
You don’t need to have all the answers. Sometimes, creating space where someone feels safe to share their truth is meaningful support all by itself.
At CARITAS, we believe people deserve a safe space to heal and time to rebuild. Creating those kinds of spaces in our communities is something all of us can work towards.
6. Support Someone in Recovery
Recovery is personal, but it doesn’t have to be lonely.
Support might look like celebrating a milestone, giving a ride to a meeting, sharing a meal, or simply being there on a difficult day.
For families and friends of people in recovery, support can also mean learning more about addiction and finding support for yourself. Recovery affects entire communities, and everyone deserves connection along the way.
Sometimes the most powerful thing you can say is simply: “I’m glad you’re here.”
7. Share Your Time, Resources, or Support
You can support recovery by helping create the resources people need to heal and rebuild.
Community support of CARITAS helps make our programs possible – from providing meals to volunteering to giving a financial gift, your support creates opportunities for recovery and long-term stability.
Consider volunteering, donating, attending a CARITAS event, or sharing our work with someone who might want to get involved. Every contribution helps strengthen the recovery community here in Richmond.
8. Keep Showing Up After September
Recovery Month may be coming to a close, but recovery happens every day.
Keep up conversations about recovery heading into the Holiday season. Keep learning, sharing stories, and showing up for your community.
Remember, you don’t have to do something huge to make a difference. Sometimes one conversation, one shared resource, or one connection is all someone needs to know they aren’t alone.
At CARITAS, we call this idea Each One, Reach One – because connection has a ripple effect. Recovery doesn’t begin or end within a single month. All year long, we’re committed to creating a community where everyone has a safe space to heal and time to rebuild.
