Single adult men represent the largest number of individuals that CARITAS shelters annually. During the winter months, CARITAS partner congregations offer three host sites, able to shelter as many as 120 men at a time.
Our male clients face a number of barriers to housing, including underemployment, criminal records, crushing debt, chronic instabliity, and medical and mental health issues. Many of these men are unable to get housing without help, and are ineligible for any other shelter program due to the very reasons they need us the most, including addictions and legal problems. These men need our help.
It is a fact that many of the men we shelter have "done time" in jail, prison, or both. However, while the Richmond City Jail charges inmates a fee of $1 per night lodging, CARITAS charges nothing to those men who are in need of shelter. While CARITAS spends about $17 per night to feed and shelter men in crisis, Richmond City spends $46 per day and the Department of Corrections spends over $85 per day. CARITAS is a cost-effective, compassionate alternative to incarcerating men who have nowhere else to go.
